Happy Friday Update

Why does my child have meltdowns?

Most people will have witnessed a child having a meltdown, which is upsetting to watch, but to be the parent of that child is upsetting, stressful and exhausting. Meltdowns affect the whole family, their teachers, their sports coaches, especially as more often than not they seemingly come out of nowhere and for no reason. Everyone can feel like they’re walking on eggshells and still the meltdowns happen.

Susan’s analogy in this video of people being like ‘pots of stew’ is one of the most effective ways that I have heard the causes of these meltdowns being explained – it just suddenly made sense as to why my daughter would explode over the smallest things!

As Susan explains in the video a child who often has meltdowns will hold their upper body rigidly. They are tight in their physical state which means they are fixed or rigid in their thinking. They are constantly in fight or flight mode.

When you are in fight or flight you are accessing the part of the brain that reacts rather than your logical, thinking part of your brain. This makes it very difficult to think a situation through and often means it is impossible to think before acting or speaking.

At Performance Breakthrough our balance and co-ordination training relaxes and releases the tightness and rigidity in the body through a series of exercises including throwing a bean bag, throwing and catching a bouncy ball and hitting a pendulum ball.

In many children, meltdowns are no longer happening within 6 months of starting the programme.  They can now reach their logic and the reasoning part of their brain so they no longer lose control over the little things.

If meltdowns are affecting your family and you would like them to be a thing of the past, get in touch, we can help!

Performance Breakthrough is an innovative and effective approach to helping many fundamental skills in education and sport.  Our balance and co-ordination exercises enable you to unlock your full potential, naturally.

If your body is not in balance, your mind doesn’t work to it’s full potential.  We have been helping children to improve in school for almost 10 years and have found that each child enhanced their ability in sport.

We are therefore delighted to be breaking into the sporting field to help sports people unlock their potential too
